Indian subcontinent based unique politics begun after the creation of two independent countries- India and Pakistan in 1947. In 28th September of that historical 1947 Sheikh Hasina, one of the most influential political leader in south Asia and along the world was born.
The biggest introduction of Sheikh Hasina in the political platform of Bangladesh is that- she is the daughter of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. But she has created her own powerful position by showing her political expertise and prudence in the stage of world politics.
The political journey of Sheikh Hasina officially started in 1981 when she joined as the president of Bangladesh Awami League at the time of the transition of the party. Later, she fulfilled the duty of Prime Minister of Bangladesh for record three times. The journey of Sheikh Hasina towards the international platform started in 1999 through her initiatives and efforts to achieve the recognition of the 21st February as International Mother Language Day. After that, on 21st October, 2010- as the prime minister of Bangladesh, she proposed the 65thsession of general council of the United Nations for observing the 21st February as International Mother Language Day every year. The proposal was unanimously passed in that session. She achieved the degree of “Doctorate of Law” in 1999 by the Australian National University for the special contribution in the establishment of human rights. In the same year, she received the “Seres Award” from F A O for the contribution in the protest against starvation and hunger.
On 5th September of 2000, the “University of Bridgeport’ awarded Sheikh Hasina with “Doctorate of Human Letters” for contributing in world’s peace and development. In the month of June in 2005, ‘People’s Friendship University’ of Russia gave Sheikh Hasina the recognition of the doctorate degree for her powerful contribution in favor of democracy, human rights and peace. In the implementation of Millennium Development Goals (MDG), her government showed extraordinary success. 6 aims among 8 of MDG was achieved and was appreciated for 2 aims.
Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was one of the rarest people who got the opportunity to be present in the final meeting of Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In 2010, the United Nations gave Sheikh Hasina the award of MDG (Millennium Development Goal) for the accomplishment of the aim of MDG-4 for reduction in child death rate. In 2011, the house of commencer speaker of England Jhon Bercow MP awarded Sheikh Hasina with Global Diversity Award for the visionary leadership in the recovery of democracy, good governance, contribution in the protection of human rights, local peace and contribution in increasing awareness to tackle the climate change.
In the same year, for implementing Information Technology (IT) in health care and reducing mortality rates for women and children, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was awarded with ‘South Award 2011: Digital Development Health’ by International Telecommunication Union (ITU), South News and the United Nations African Union Cooperation together. Keeping in mind the climate change that is currently happening and how it is effecting Bangladesh and other third world countries, Sheikh Hasina has taken notable steps. Acknowledging her contributions, the United Nations has awarded her with “Champion of The Earth”. After Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina is the second person to deliver a speech in Bengali at the 71st United Nations General Assembly. On the 25th of March, 2015- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was awarded with WIP (Women in Parliament) global award at Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa for demonstrating leadership in promoting equality between men and women in politics.
In recent times, Sheikh Hasina has taken important steps regarding the Rohingya issue. She has provided refuge to more than 1 million Rohingya people, in recognition of her actions she was awarded with the title of “Mother of Humanity” by the global citizens. Sheikh Hasina has made a special place for herself in the international platform courtesy of her notable leadership skills.
In 2011, she was placed 7th on the list of the world’s 10 most influential women. It’s also notable that- in 2010, she was placed 6th on New York Times Magazine online journal. In 2015, she came on 59th on the list of the world’s most powerful women. In 2014, on the same list she was placed 47th. In 2010, she was placed 10th on the Fortune Magazine’s list of 50 most influential people. For her outstanding contribution in foreign policy for fighting climate change, she was placed in the “Decision Maker” category on the list of the highest 13 intellectuals of the world. On the list of the world’s most powerful women, Sheikh Hasina was placed 36th by the Forbes Magazine.
For her immense contribution in international politics, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is considered an icon in politics. Sheikh Hasina has proved herself as a role model for the global politics.
